BodyPump men, I salute you

So, I teach Body Pump for Fitness First 3 or 4 times a week, and I love it, it is my favourite class!

I lift pretty heavy weights for a little person, but I believe that as long as your technique is decent enough then load that bar and go for it…..Ok, this post isn’t about how strong I am, that stuff doesn’t really matter, it’s a shout-out to the men that come to my classes …… actually, it’s is a shout-out to all the men that go to group fitness classes.

Gentlemen I salute you!

A wee story ….

Last week, Tuesday, Fitness First Mosman, Body Pump 5.30pm

Warm-up track over, I press play on my iPod  (track 2 squat track -DOA, FooFighters – it’s a killer track), turn the fans off  (yes I turn the fans off to make it a wee bit uncomfortable with the hope to get some kind of reaction… In my head I really want someone to shout “THIS IS  SPARTAAAAA” ), I turn to the class and it hits me ……there are circa 10 MEN in the class out of 45ish people. WOW ! 10 DUDES!!!  You may be thinking that’s a lot of women but from my perspective that is a shit load of men and they are here to work hard, I can see it in their eyes.

The End.

This moment sparked my intentions for this post.

Over the past 6 months I have noticed a fairly consistent ratio of men to women in my pump classes and I have got to say……. RESPECT fellas!

Here are some of the reasons these guys deserve a high-five.

 1. They see women as worthy opponents

Why shouldn’t men be in classes? We spend so much time talking about inequality and this, in my opinion, is a small step towards what all feminists are on about.

2. These dudes respect and see how strong women can be

These men come to classes, they work hard, sweat, keep going, even when they see women around them lifting heavier weights….This actually inspires and challenges them.

3. They go against the Status Quo

Spin it any way you want but there is still a majority opinion that classes are for girls and men should be in the weights room working chest and biceps.

The men that walk into a group fitness class go out of their comfort zone and for that I love them.

Maybe, just maybe, this is a small step towards putting men and women on an even playing field in society.

and finally

4. They see the results

These classes are hard!

I still get a WTF moment when I talk to guys and they insinuate that body pump is lame, too easy, for women…… Get out from under your rock, come try, then tell me that afterwards.

The men that come to classes usually end up committed regulars! Why you ask? ….. I reckon some of you have already assumed its to check out chicks, but come on, do you really believe these men put themselves through an hour of pain to have a perve? NO, they don’t….They do it because it works, they get motivated, share positive energy (most of the time) and hopefully enjoy it.

To the BodyPump men of the world ….. keep doing what you’re doing as you are helping, even if just a wee bit, make a positive shift in the world.

Laura x

Hello….So I decided to start a wee blog

My name is Laura. I am Scottish. I like to laugh. I teach fitness classes and love everything health & fitness related.

I have my own business called Fitness Catwalk and have recently launched my own brand KOLLIDE. Check it out here!

My life right now is based in Sydney and I love it. I spend most of my time focussing on developing my website and teaching fitness classes like: Barre, Pilates, Yoga, Body Pump and Body Attack.

I decided to start a blog to talk about all things fitness and activewear related as this is basically my life right now. I see firsthand the effects that different classes have on women’s bodies and more importantly their mindset. I like to think that this will be a place full of stories and insights from my perspective of the new wave of the fit female tribe:

Independent, Ambitious, Stylish Superwomen.

What inspires me is the way group fitness brings people together and opens up pathways for connection, support, sharing of stories. I love to see people shine as brightly and as confidently as they possibly can and the roll on effects it has to others.

I hope you read this and feel something, think something, enjoy or just have a laugh. I am not a great writer so I am completely out of my comfort zone…..But they do say that’s were the magic happens.

Here is one of my favourite quotes/stories that I hope makes you smile.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
